Sri Lanka Floods Death Toll Nears Two Hundred
Emergency crews persist in rescue and recovery missions throughout numerous districts devastated by torrential flooding, mudslides, and extensive infrastructure collapse following severe weather patterns that struck the island beginning November 17, media reported.
Following Cyclone Ditwah's landfall Wednesday, the disaster has affected more than 968,000 people spanning 266,114 households nationwide, officials confirmed. Authorities have established 1,094 emergency relief facilities currently housing over 147,000 displaced residents.
In response to the cyclone's widespread devastation, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake issued a state of emergency declaration for the island nation on Saturday, according to media.
Government officials have announced that both expatriate Sri Lankans and international donors are welcome to support relief operations for disaster victims.
Emergency management agencies have issued critical flood warnings for multiple major river systems, urging downstream residents to evacuate their homes without delay.
Dissanayake authorized the mobilization of more than 20,000 military troops to bolster rescue efforts, media reported.
Officials previously issued a red-alert landslide advisory for eight high-risk districts, indicating extreme danger to mountainous terrain, hillside settlements, and susceptible areas.
According to All India Radio, the India Meteorological Department has issued a red warning for India's southeastern regions, including north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and adjoining south Andhra Pradesh coasts.
